Choosing Your Philadelphia Neighborhood

There are different factors to consider when choosing a neighborhood in Philadelphia. You need to know how much it costs, what makes the neighborhood unique, and how far it is from other places. Many different neighborhoods are a part of more prominent regions in Philadelphia. Please take a look at some of them and what they have to offer.


1. Northwest Philadelphia

This area is made up of several communities located around Wissahickon Park. You will find central corridors with local businesses and restaurants in these neighborhoods, and it has more greenery than other areas.

2. Far Northeast Philadelphia

This area is close to Center City, and it has parks, such as Pennypack Park. You will find youth sports here, and there are many different international restaurants. It is easy to get to some of the suburbs nearby, and it contains some of the trendiest neighborhoods in the entire country.

3. South Philadelphia

This area includes Bella Vista, Queen Village, East Passyunk, and other neighborhoods. It is primarily a residential area with historic churches, townhouses, and rowhouses. They have recently added some apartment buildings as well.

4. Center City

Center city is in the center of downtown, including Old City, Washington Square, Rittenhouse, and Society Hill. Each area has its own charm, but you will find jobs, shopping, and restaurants scattered throughout. This is the most expensive place to live in the Philadelphia area, but it is very active.

5. Fishtown/Northern Liberties

The areas of Fishtown and Northern Liberties are just northeast of Old City (Center City), and it is experiencing rapid growth right now. It isn’t possible to walk from this area to Center City, but you can take the elevated rail line, called the Market-Frankford line. There are also buses that offer transport.

6. Callowhill

Callowhill is the “Loft District,” and you will find artist’s lofts and old warehouses that have been converted. There are some new restaurants and breweries here as well. It is an up-and-coming area.

7. Near Northwest/Fairmount

This area surrounds the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Rodin Museum. It is residential and offers access to cultural centers and plenty of restaurant choices.

8. University City/West Philly

University City is the home of the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. It is also the place for a growing scene in biotech and medical.

There are different neighborhoods within each region, but it is essential to select your region first.
